Happy Turkey Trot 2012

My favorite part of the Thanksgiving holiday? The Turkey Trot!

Having a day off mid-week to run a race makes it a great day. This morning, Kevin and I ran the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot 10K in San Jose. The race is conveniently located in walking distance from our condo and the course winds around downtown San Jose. It's actually a huge event with about 20K people between the 5K and 10K.

This morning dawned rather cold for what we are used to, mid-40s, so I vetoed my original outfit plan (singlet, arm warmers, shorts) for capris and layered my Oiselle singlet with the stripey long sleeve. Good choice! I was super comfy and not too hot.

I didn't go into the event expecting to even attempt my 10K race pace, but I felt great in the first mile and decided to go for it. I really never know how the day will go until I get a mile or so into the race. Here are today's splits, which I'm very pleased with!

Mile 1 - 9:08
Mile 2 - 9:29
Mile 3 - 9:12
Mile 4 - 9:05
Mile 5 - 9:06
Mile 6 - 8:39
Last 0.2 (0.33 by my watch) - 8:08
Total time on watch - 57:19
Average Pace - 9:04

Official time for 6.2 miles - 57:13

My current PR is on a course that seemed about 0.1 short, which would make this my real PR even though that time was a little faster. I never know what to do in those situations; let's just say I feel really good about today's race!

Last year there was a huge bottleneck at the finish line that delayed my finish by about 3 minutes, but this year they changed the start/finish and it completely took care of the issue. Great job by the race organizers! The course is well staffed with volunteers too. The shirts are pretty cute, similar to last year but different colors.

I'm liking the powder blue.

This afternoon we are headed to Thanksgiving dinner with a group of friends who, like us, are not living near family and didn't make the trip home for the holiday. I'm looking forward to dinner and the time off around the house for a couple of days. As much as I miss being with family, it's very nice not to travel during crazy times of year.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

  1. Great job!!

I'm with you on the family thing. I haven't seen mine for Christmas or Thanksgiving in over five years. Air traveling (back to Michigan) is crazy.

    1. We go back to Ohio, so I totally feel your pain. It's really nice not to travel this year, although we will have family coming to us at Christmas!

  2. Those are great splits! Especially for going into it relaxed and not even thinking of racing. And you're so lucky this is right by your house.

  5. How cool that your ran the Turkey Trot.
My town has a 5K Gobble Wobble, but I was stuck walking it this year.
I would much prefer a 10K as I like longer distances.
    Great run!

  6. Those shirts are way cute. I wish more races did long sleeve shirts - they're much needed! And I'm also very jealous that you can walk to so many race starts - that's so great!
