Plans Change

This weekend we planned to head to Malibu and to do the Malibu Half as a training run with fabulous scenery. Sadly, I managed to catch a cold this week and we canceled the hotel this morning. No! Who has time to be sick? I'm ok with it though, I knew I planned a lot into this fall and I need to listen to my body. Traveling and getting up at 4:30 am to run on Sunday probably isn't the ticket to recovery.

Last Sunday's 18 miler wiped me out way more than usual, perhaps because I was already starting to get a cold. My Tuesday and Wednesday easy runs even left me feeling bad so I bailed on yesterday's plan. I hate that I'm dropping miles in the second to last week of training before CIM, but I'm trying to balance staying healthy and functioning at work with training. Sometimes the training schedule just has to change.

That said, I've had quality training runs in the last few weeks and generally hit my mileage goals, so that makes me happy. I know that even with less mileage this week, I'm ahead of where I've been in past training cycles with respect to time on the feet. I've had my highest mileage months ever during September and October. I'm still confident I'll have a good race at CIM; if it isn't a PR day, I'm more than ready to enjoy the event anyway.

I'm also loving this article on taking an 'off season' and giving your body time to rest from racing. I always worry that if I stop running a certain number of miles per week, I won't be able to get back there easily. Plus, living in California and having great weather year-round means you don't need to consider staying in to avoid snow, ice, and cold temps. Add that to the huge number of accessible race events, and I end up doing way more races than ever before. My automatic 'off season' disappeared when I moved here, but I'll be bringing some rest and variety back into my fitness life after CIM this year.

In happier news, I'm officially registered for the San Francisco Marathon 2014! Registration is open, so sign up now for the lowest prices if you want to run. I'm pumped to finish off the 52 Club challenge this year!

Have a great weekend all, if you need me I'll be resting and cuddling with Willow...

  1. Too bad you won't be at Malibu. My husband is the announcer for the half (and the full at the finish line) and I'll be there just taking a short run then hanging around until he's finished working. Sorry that you're sick and I hope you feel better soon.

I think the wonderful thing about our bodies is that we really can take a season off and come back as strong or even stronger than before. Rest is a wonderful thing.

Take care of yourself and run strong at CIM.

  2. I hear you on the automatic rest season. I moved to California from Alaska and I really have to make sure to do an off season (I run trails instead of roads), but it is tempting with year round racing opportunities!

Very smart choice about dropping some miles when you're sick. Taking a few extra days to recover isn't going to ruin an entire training season. :) Feel better soon!

  3. Get some rest and get well soon! You've already put in the work (lots of work from the looks of it!) and you have a solid base; enjoy yourself at CIM!

  5. Paulette, I love the photo at the top! (Sorry, I don't know the name of it...cover photo??). Everything will be fine for CIM! It's just one foot in front of the other, right?

    1. Thanks! Yep, one foot in front of the other. A friend in Michigan told me that one time and made me laugh, I still think of it. Glad you said it too. :)

  7. Hi! Hope you're feeling better! Sometimes its hard to the do right thing, for your body or in general! I'm excited you're doing the CIM! This will be my first full marathon on December 8th! I've done the relay a handful of times, because it's in my backyard, but now it will be my introduction to being a "marathoner"! Good luck on you're race and maybe I'll see you oth there!
